Our Story

Who We Are

The Phoenix is a thoughtfully curated, lifestyle brand located in a space that inspires creativity and wanderlust. Our Georgetown, D.C. shop is deeply rooted in the community, opening its doors more than 65 years ago.

Third-generation owner Samantha Hays Gushner’s commitment to sustainability and close relationships with our designers and artisans ensures that our clothing, jewelry and home goods come from responsible, eco-friendly sources.

Our Intention

Through immersive events, mission-based passion projects, and a commitment to giving back we strive to support our community’s desire for more sustainable living.

Our History

The Phoenix is a family-owned fixture in Washington, D.C., first opening its doors in 1955. The thoughtfully curated collection of global & sustainable fashion, jewelry and home goods was founded by Bill and Betty Hays. The two traveled to Mexico annually with their family where they would curate their collection of clothing and artwork for their Georgetown storefront.

By 1980, Bill and Betty's son, John Hays and his wife Sharon, took over the business and expanded the shop's selection to include a more diverse collection of clothing brands, staying true to the family's commitment to find designers and artisans that are ethical and sustainable. The Phoenix is now owned by John and Sharon's daughter, Samantha Hays Gushner.

Real Life

We believe in not taking ourselves too seriously. Most days, you'll find Sam at the shop. Otherwise, you'll find her on the road to Maine with her husband, two kids and five dogs where she returns to her roots to expand the Made in Maine collection for the shop.

We're glad you're here and if you've made it this far, we hope it made you smile. Stop by again-things change frequently around here, or drop us a line-we'd love to hear from you!
